The core curriculum of Firefly Friends is based on fireflies because they create their own light from within. Fireflies inspire wonder in all ages and evoke fond childhood memories of magical summer nights for many. Fireflies are also real creatures that exist in the natural world, as opposed to imagined beings from myths or fairytales. They can be seen in our own backyards, reminding us of the power we have to shine in the darkness. Fireflies live all over the world, emitting flashes of light ranging from yellow to green to blue to orange, depending on their species.
Fireflies have four wings, and the Firefly Friends curriculum is thus presented in four 4-week modules called “wings.” The firefly patch that children earn at the end of each “wing” corresponds to one of the four aforementioned colors in which fireflies glow.
